Subject: Chessmaster 6000 1.0.2 Patch now available

Author: John Merlino

For those of you who are interested, the latest patch for Chessmaster 6000 (to
version 1.0.2) was just put up on the Chessmaster website (www.chessmaster.com).

Here's the highlights from the Read Me file:

                          *** What's New for v1.0.2? ***

1. The program no longer crashes attempting to play a rated game
against a Grandmaster personality.

2. Several dozen more cosmetic fixes and clarifications to tutorials.
The Chessmaster team thanks our many loyal fans who pointed out the
errors that have been corrected (special thanks to Bill Haines and
Komputer Korner), and we apologize for any frustration or confusion
that may have occurred to any users due to these errors.

3. Fixed an incompatibility with machines that had Internet Explorer
5.0 Installed on them. This bug manifested itself as an error stating
that the version number for COMCTL32.DLL was invalid, followed by
Chessmaster not starting up.

4. Loosened the requirement for the user to have a Chessmaster CD-ROM
in the CD drive. The copy protection now works as follows: Once the
program asks for a Chessmaster CD, it will not do so again for a
period of anywhere EITHER between 7 and 21 days OR between 14 and 21
sessions. You WILL, however, need the appropriate CD in the drive to
access voice annotated functions such as tutorials, Josh Waitzkin's
annotated games, Natural Language Advice, etc., unless these files
were installed to your hard drive.
Several users have also asked if it is possible to avoid having to
switch CDs when running a tutorial. You can accomplish this by copying
the file TUTORIAL.DAT from your Chessmaster CD #2 to your Chessmaster
directory on your hard drive. This file is very large, however (about
545MB), so make sure that you have the space to spare.

5. Fixed a bug where some data regarding a user's move in Chessmaster
Live was not fully updated on that user's machine before being sent to
the opponent. This could result in 3-move repetition draws or mating
moves not being displayed properly to either user.

6. Fixed a bug where the "Enforce Time" checkbox in the Challenge
dialog could be turned off for a rated game in Chessmaster Live. Time
controls are now always forced for rated games on Chessmaster Live.

7. Some menu items and accelerator changes for Chessmaster Live:
-- The Challenge menu item was moved from the Windows menu to the
Actions Menu.
-- The accelerator for the Chat window was changed from Ctrl+H to
Ctrl+G.
-- The accelerator for the Online Information window was changed from
Ctrl+I to Ctrl+O.

8. The Game Status window will now show whether a game is rated or
unrated in Chessmaster Live.

9. The Auto-Annotator now fully demonstrates mating lines greater than
mate in 10.

10. The Select Personality and Play Rated Game dialogs now come up with
the same settings as the last time you used them for the current
session.

11. The board coordinates are now automatically turned on during a
tutorial. Without the coordinates, there was some confusion as to
whether the board was being shown from Black's or White's perspective.

12. The title of the current tutorial is now displayed in the tutorial
dialog.

-----------

Enjoy!
