I like very much CSTAL I and II -specially one, with the grimacing face of that kind of monster there, smiling..- but I believe the all thing is the inverse you postulate. The reason of a CSTAL kind of program is to substitute brute force with short-cuts, to say it simple. But If you have all powerful computers, even brute force approach will give results, as it is already the case. And then smart approach becomes obsolete. Nevertheless, a somewhat tamed CSTAL with a more powerfull hardware could give some unexpected excellent results. Who knows. For me they are good enough now. But, who is going to tame he horse?
