Ha! I'm debating the same question myself. For what it's worth, I am personally
looking at one of two (actually three) different options for a basic software
collection. Let me also add that I own CM 6000...a very nice $29 investment
compared to some of the other bug ridden (non-Chess) strategy games I've
purchased in my lifetime.

Plan A: Fritz 5.32/Fritz 5 PowerBooks/Chess Base 7.0 Basic

The total for Plan A is around $314.00

Plan B: Fritz 5.32/Fritz 5 PowerBooks/Rebel 10/Chess Mentor Comprehensive Chess
Course/Chess Base 6.0

The total for Plan B is around $317.00

Let me add that with Chess Base 6.0, which you can purchase for $99.00, you can
always upgrade to 7.0 for an additional $99.00 (yes...it's cheaper to buy it
that way, but I understand that you don't get the manuals when you upgrade.?)
Also, you would need to get Chess Base 6.0 directly from ChessBase. I suppose
another option would be to just get Chess Base Light and use it until you could
get Chess Base 7.0 at some point in the future.

Plan C: Chess Mentor Deluxe @ $299.00

I just thought that I would add Plan C because in all reality, I need more
tutoring, training and practice than perhaps anything else. For $299, the
complete Chess Mentor package seems to be an investment that would be worthwhile
for a player who is at best average (which unfortunately describes me!). Since
you didn't give any info on your background, please don't be offended if indeed
you're a 2000+ player...these are just plans I'm considering for myself.

Just one more thing while I'm at it. For under $50 you can join ICC for a year
and get to play a whole lot of chess! ICC also has regular "teaching" times with
MrSpock and you can watch GM's play whenever they are on. You're probably
already a member, but if not, I would set aside at least $29 for the 6 month
membership to go with your software purchases.

May many passed pawns be yours in 1999!
