I thought about that after I had posted, that it might only be present in VC6
Pro and above. In that case, you have the Standard version. I don't think the
standard version even comes with an optimizing compiler. So not having a
profiler may not be a big issue. Do you think non-optimized code will still give
a good picture of the program if it were profiled? I am not sure.

In any case, you could do better than VC6 Standard. You can still use the IDE if
you like it, but you could get a free compiler like GCC for Windows to compile
and test the code for speed issues. GCC does a decent job of optimizing these
days, and it has a debugger and a profiler (and no telling what other goodies I
have yet to discover).

The newest GCC does a better job of optimizing than the VC6 Pro version that I
have, and VC6 isn't going to get any better anytime soon, while GCC will
continue to be developed and improved. There are even free IDEs that are
comparable to the VC6 IDE.

Here is a free one that I've used that comes with GCC:

Or if you want a whole slew of GNU/Linux tools along with the command line GCC,
you can get Cygwin. I have this and use it often.
