Badly.  :-)

On my machine (Windows XP) I find 53 updates applied over 2.5 years. 12 of these
are from this year.

I people run the applications, and they are remotely exploitable, that's bad
whether its the core or not.

Yes, you are protected. There are maybe 50-100 million Windows users that are
not. You will never find that many unpatched Linux users, ever.

Windows' problem is that it is popular! That makes it a bigger target.
