Fritz uses the winboard interface commands to speak with the engines. But it uses them in another way than winboard does. After each move it sends a "new" command, which means clear the board and begin at the start position for most programs. Then it feeds the program with all moves till now!! So programmers have to "tune" their programs not only to winboard, but also to fritz. Then everything works. "Running" under Fritz does only mean, the engine works, but does not mean it works fast and good. Chessbase emailed most of the programmers and described the problem, and theit engine interface. I think, this is fair. Now the programmers have to implement real "Fritz comatibility". Conclusion: This is no bug in Fritz. Second: Also if the "fritz compatibility" is programmed in the engines, they will not be so strong as in "normal play" cause of above strategy. Third: Also in winboard, running two machines, you get loss of performance. If both programs use pondering, who gets the prozessor time? If you do not use pondering, the program looses a very important feature for strength. Think about it! Greetings Werner
