One of my main points is that HW does place a crucial role.

I run a crafty bot on FICS right now. I have a Dual G4 533mhz box and I've
beaten other (C) accounts running shredder/Fritz/Hiarcs who ran on slower
hardware.

Is crafty better? Not necessarily, just that I had better hardware at the time.
