excellent essay! however i must respectfully disagree on one minor point using a nice board and pieces to play against a PC program still requires the player to watch the screen.make your move with a mouse etc etc for me at least it interferes with the natural way of playing chess.. this however is a small point and your essay gets to the heart of matter quite nicely i do think of my computers as real opponents, players with different playing styles and nuances this is one reason why i get so upset if one of them suddenly becomes defective its as if i can no longer meet this particular opponent in battle across the board..and it is very sad Best Regards Steve
