  You came close to the truth. The physical chess board is only a shell around a
'program' written by someone, just like the one on a monitor. But a dedicated,
at least a good one, is a piece of furniture, a converstion piece, and a piece
of property to take with you for life. Not just a disc.
  I've got a Novag Expert, still a strong opponent although I rarely play it. I
will always have it to benchmark my own playing strength as the years go by
because it will always have the exact same playing strength.
