Seen at the same depth, null move lowers the tactical ability of an engine.
Fortunately, it enables you to search deeper.

I think that's why Hsu left it out of deep blue, he thought it didn't give
enough extra, and the risc of tactical mistakes on shallow searches was
considered to big.
