Everything what ChessBase has created was always connected to the always actually most advanced hardware or software development of Intel and MS. So often you couldn't use the new version of ChessBase if you either didn't update to more memory space or say WIN 95. For example you can't use Fritz 8 or ChessBase 8 without WIN 98 or XP. That has nothing to do with pure chess. It's sometimes a thing of 3D (therefore XP & DivX etc.) or such. Also the engines formerly were adapted to Intel. Only after it turned out that AMD was even better for chess purposes the authors tuned their code for AMD too. I don't know if one should criticise this trend. It's simply a marketing and economical neccessity. Viewed from the perspective of business. Just try to log on ICC, they offer also live transmissions of the games and much more in their rooms.
