Looking at this game, at several occasions, Crafty was obviously only searching
2 ply's down. This is one of the worst 'computer against human' games I saw in
1998 with regard to the performance of the computer system.
This is not exactly very scientific. Either Bob disconnects his "super-PC" when
he is rebuilding his Linux kernel or he is going to lose the high rating for
this excellent system very soon. - Crafty on any system I use (even the slowest
p5/90) is playing very strongly.
The Crafty-system you played against would not even win against my little 620
H/PC. You certainly were playing against a machine with 99.9% CPU usage for
other processes. Try a rematch and you will lose without the slightest change to
win. A machine with a rating above 2800 can only be beaten by a handful of
humans in the entire world. Maybe, by chance, you might squeeze out a draw. But
even this I find highly unlikely.
Since you did not know that the machine you played against was obviously being
used for other tasks, I can certainly understand your excitment.
