May I offer a suggestion:
What I did worked seemingly well. Use the normal time controls that
are used in the tournament. But, have the computer estimate the total
time for game at 90% of the remaining time. This gives you time to
do the manual movements.
Also, print your pv -- yes, this slows things down a little. I adjusted
my pv to print only when the root move changed. This has two effects:
1) it doesn't was as much time as printing the pv all the time
2) it gives you an idea which piece is going to be moved so you hand can
be ready when in a time crunch.
I find this very useful in a few games and in the blitz tournament.
