The last time, I had played around with it, I wasn't able to verify improvements due to history heuristics; in some positions the history had helped, in others it had slowed down the search a bit. However, I hadn't removed it because it didn't cost much neither. I suspect that its effects on the search had been more essential in the pre-transposition table ages, when move orderings had been worse in general.
