To win a WCCC (or to do well there) you need: 1. good hardware. quad 850 meets that although there may be a faster box there for all we know. IE HP makes at least an 8-way box and insiders have said they have 16-ways as well. 2. Solid program. Crafty fits that as it plays hundreds of games a week, and crashing is not likely, although we did have a problem in game 1 due to a lack of testing a particular setup methodology well. 3. Good Book preparation. Can't play old openings that an opponent can bust with some analysis. Can't play openings that have a recent refutation. Can't play openings that the program simply doesn't understand. Peter has done well here and will probably continue to do so. 4. Have a bit of good luck. IE anybody can draw anybody. To win you have to beat the ones you are supposed to beat, every time, and get a bit of luck against the rest. A bit of bad luck against the programs you should beat and you end up in the middle of the pack. Too early to discuss lady luck so far, other than after round 5 has completed, Crafty will have played the top three already. Been tough pairings for it so far. Spend some time in Las Vegas a couple of weeks back. Did well playing black jack. Might have already used up my "good luck". Or maybe it is sticking with me. We will see. :)
