Hi, Joshua.
You have money -- good! But you might consider saving it since there are
archives of games between most of these ancient monsters.
You've already heard from Dr. Bob Hyatt, programmer of Crafty and Cray Blitz.
But if you really want to "put up a few thousand," here's some more info for
you:
Hitech. Dr. Hans Berliner retired in 1998 from his computer-science
professorship at Carnegie Mellon University. I don't know what happened to the
Hitech hardware. A faculty page (http://people.cs.cmu.edu/faculty/index.html)
gives an email address that he might check from time to time, and also a
university phone number. His last book "The System" (1999) gives his Florida
address:
4000 N. Ocean Dr., #1903
Riviera Beach, FL 33404
Deep Thought / Deep Blue / Deeper Blue. The principal machine architect Dr.
Feng-Hsiung Hsu left IBM in 1999, then spent thousands of dollars acquiring from
them the rights to his Deep Blue hardware design. His attempts to get a
re-match commitment from Kasparov so he could get sponsorship and funding to
build a new chess machine, were rebuffed by Kasparov's agents. He has some
part-time interest in programming Chinese chess now (I think), and may come back
to regular chess sometime -- but don't hold your breath! You might be able to
contact him through the publisher of his book, "Behind Deep Blue". And I
believe Dr. Hyatt chats with him every now and then.
Belle. Ken Thompson is retired from Lucent Technologies (the old Bell Labs
group of AT&T). A web page there (http://cm.bell-labs.com/who/ken) gives an
email address he might monitor. Again, I don't know what happened to the
various versions of Belle. I suspect they are all in museums.
Bebe. This used a computer built by the small company SYS-10, Inc., with added
custom hardware for chess. The company president Tony Scherzer, who was also
the computer engineer and program author, sadly died at an early age about ten
years ago.
Good luck -- and keep us informed of your progress!
