I should have made it clearer.

I'm referring to running a tournament in fritz8 gui. Suppose 6 engines are all
using the same book. And suppose book learning is checked. It does appear that
the book is modified at the end of each game.

What happened is that after a lengthy time of many engines sharing the same
book, the engines started to have trouble getting started with the book. They
started calculating their first move, and after that, they started to use the
book. But they used the book for less moves than they did originally.

I decided therefore to give each engine its own "copy" of the original book and
let each engine's book learn according to the likes/dislikes of that engine.
