A King must never be subject to capture (as he would be if the other King is
adjacent).  If he cannot avoid capture while under attack, it is checkmate and
the game is over (the player attacking - checking - the King having won).  If a
player can make no legal move without putting his (so far unattacked) King under
attack, it is stalemate and the game is drawn.
May I say one thing more without condescension or arrogance?  Get a good book
for beginning players, it will greatly enhance your enjoyment of this wonderful
game.  I bet almost everyone here did so once, too.
