"Republica Argentina" Chess Festival 2004
==========================================

Round 2: Shredder draws but keeps the lead - by Roberto Alvarez

The second round of the "Republica Argentina Chess Festival" was plenty of
emotions. The weather changed, and we had a sunny day (though very cold), and
this in some way was encouraging for many of the participants.

In the GM event, the round ended with 4 leaders: IM Diego Valerga (aiming for
his definitive GM norm and the tittle) beated IM Jose Cubas, after 43 moves
of an interesting French Defense, where White managed to break Black´s
fortress with very interesting maneuvers, worthy of a closed study. IM
Salvador Alonso had to battle during almost 4 hours to beat Leonardo Fusco
(Sicilian Defense, Maroczy Bind, 62 moves), and FM Ricardo Szmetan saved a
lost game against GM Oscar Panno after a miraculous perpetual check. All of
them are now with 1,5 points out 2, joining first place with Shredder 8.0.

The german chess-playing program played a Caro-Kann against IM Bernardo
Roselli -the only human who was able to bet a ChessBase program during the
past editions of this Festival-, and reached a very promising position, with
an slight edge. A critical moment arised on move 12, where theory recommends
12.f5!?, an interesting "pawn sacrifice", over the more positional 12.b3.
What to do in such a situation? I was sure that Roselli would not sacrifice
the pawn, considering the calculating powers of Shredder 8 ... and I was
right! He played 12.b3 and got nothing from the opening. Black´s 26...Re8
surprised us, since the rook was well posted at d8, "pressing" on d4. After
some maneuvers, White was able to improve the position of his pieces, and
Black´s small edge vanished. The game went till move 56, were a draw was
declared (the position was repeated three times).

Shredder 8.0 got his first win after beating FM Pablo Dellamorte. White
played very carefully, with lengthy maneuvers, but without giving Black any
problems. Move 44.h4 seems to be the origin of White´s nightmare, and
Shredder 8.0 sized its chance to win the game with precise maneuvers.
With 1,5 out 2, Shredder took the lead, joined with IM Sergio Giardelli and
IM Enrique Scarella.

Today there would be very interesting games, with Shredder 8 having the white
pieces against IM Diego Valerga, and its "twin computer" facing IM Sergio
Giardelli in the IM event.
