Round 3: "Terminator" 8 - by Roberto Alvarez
Surely you will remember Arnold Schwartzeneger´s movies "Terminator". Well,
me too, and last round of the "Republica Argentina Chess Festival" was
something like one of those movies, with fight and "blood" over the board.
Almost without exception, the players fighted during hours in search of the
nice sensation one gets after a win.
The GM tournament saw terrible battles during more than 4 hours of play.
After a more or less short draw between Jose Cubas and Sergio Slipak (not so
short in terms of minutes over the board), all the games were decided within
the last few minutes. Of course, the time-rate (90 min + 30 seconds each
move) used in FIDE tournaments produces a lot of emotions, but the game
quality is indeed affected.
Shredder 8 played 1.c4 against IM Diego Valerga, who replied 1...c6. The game
followed 2.e4!? d5 3.exd5 cxd4 4.d4 (this move order is issued to avoid the
Slav), with the same position reached in Round 1 (see Shredder 8 vs Fusco).
Valerga played a very solid game, and after the exchange of dark-squared
bishops, Shredder mobilized its central pawns (c3-c4), producing "hanging
pawns" (c4-d4). 19.c5!? was indeed interesting, though usually, in these
positions, the break d4-d5 is more usual. As a result, White got a passed
pawn at c5, but well blockaded. The only problem seems to be that Black´s
position is something passive, although difficult to break. Lengthy maneuvers
followed during more than 30 moves, where Shredder 8 put pressure on Black´s
game, forcing Valerga to play very carefully. The critical position seems to
be at move 59, when White "sacrificed" a pawn with 59.c6!, a move that
escaped Black´s calculations - he had only a few minutes in his clock, versus
nearly 20 of White). The pawn could not be accepted, and this fact let White
to get a clear advantage. On move 70, Valerga, as a gentleman, recognized his
defeat.
After 3 rounds, Shredder 8 is leading the tournament with 2,5 out of 3, the
same score than IM Salvador Alonso, who beated IM Bernardo Roselli after 39
moves of a Sicilian Dragon. GM Andres Rodriguez won over IM Jorge Rosito and,
if he wins his postponed game versus IM Oswaldo Zambrana, he would join the
leaders (and if he loose, Bolivian´s strongest player Zambrana would be the
one who take the lead).
The IM tournament was also plenty of fighting spirit. The first game to
finish was between Shredder 8 and IM Sergio Giardelli. After a quiet opening,
the "fireworks" started on move 20. With 20.Nxe6! White sacrifices apparently
sacrifices a knight, but indeed he gets a rook and two pawns in exchange for
two minor pieces, and some light-square weaknessess on Black´s kingside, plus
a weak pawn at d6. 27...Nd7 seems to be the decise mistake, and Shredder 8
sized the opportunity with 29.e5!, winning material, since Black´s knight at
c5 was "en prise". The finish is elegant, not to mention that Shredder let
its queen under enemy fire.
Round 4 (within a few hours) will surely produce interesting games, and I
guess there would be very few "short" draws, if any. Shredder 8 will carry
black pieces against IM Jose Cubas and FM Jorge Molina, while Panno vs
Rodriguez and Valerga vs Alonso seems to be "a priori" two of the most
interesting encounters to enjoy.
Till tomorrow!
