Some CPUs have additional registers and instructions that are not available to
others. It may or may not run faster on your system. The best thing to do is
to try them out and see.

On crafty, you can test the raw search speed with a command called bench. You
will see 6 periods printed slowly and then numbers will appear. The NPS should
be high and the TTP should be low for a good bench score.

There are surely lots of crafty binaries around now.
Here is one I made:
ftp://cap.connx.com/pub/chess-engines/new-approach/Crafty-1915.exe
You will need this also:
ftp://cap.connx.com/pub/chess-engines/new-approach/crafty.hlp

Put them in your crafty directory and start it up and type 'bench' {without the
quotes} to see how fast it is.
You can also try Brian's build and any of the others.
It has become popular to build crafty versions, so they are all over the place
now.

I make changes to the source code, so mine are a tiny bit different. I
initialize a few variables and also lengthen some paths to FILENAME_MAX size
instead of 100 bytes. I also reformat it, to make it easier for me to read.

By the way, I don't know all the details. Others around here are more expert at
assembly language than I am. Probably Gerd is among the best.
