I don't think that Chess Computer's interest in France is so low. There are
several very good engines (Chess Tiger, Chess Wizard for example) and a chess
programs championship took place recently (in june).

May be a start of explanation : I bought my Par Excellence in New York in 1987.
I paid it $140 including taxes ; in France, it costed 2900 FRF which represented
around $450 !!
