Round 7: The "shredding machine" at full power - by Roberto Alvarez
"Shredder" means something like to a "shredding machine", and truly, after
studying some of their games of the famous german chess program, one cannot
dissagree with this statement! Yerterday, on Round 7 and with the black
pieces, Shredder 8 won a nice game to FM Ricardo Szmetan, after 34 moves of a
Queen´s Pawn, London System. After the game, chessfriend Szmetan admitted
that the program refuted a line he had prepared to play against strong
opponents! After a more or less usual opening moves, White makes a new plan
with 11.Nd2, with the idea of exchanging the light-square bishops after Bf3,
and then to close the center with d4-d5. Black reacts energetically in the
center (14...e6) and prepares counterplay on the queenside (16..a6), but the
"pawn-push" 17...g5!, virtually forcing White to exchange one of his bishops,
is clever for Black´s advantage. With simple queen maneuvers, Shredder "tied"
White´s pieces to the defense of his king, and the "apparent" sacrifice
23...b5! indicated Black´s attacking intentions. The brilliant finish
(33..Bxf2! and 34...Rb2!) with mate in a few moves, forced the immediate
resignation of Szmetan, who kindly congratulated his opponent (and so, we
shall congratulate the programmers and Chessbase´s team!).
IM Jose Cubas scored his second win in the tournament, beating Oswaldo
Zambrana, who, after an excellent start (3,5 out of 4), lost the last two
games in a row, and today he will try to "revert" the trend playing against
Shredder 8.0.
The "Duel of Generations" was won by the one most experienced : Oscar Panno
(69) beated Leonardo Fusco (15) - he is one of the "hopes" of the Chess
School "Fray Ruy Lopez de Sigura", which proyect is strongly supported by the
city of Vicente Lopez.
Today there will be a "key" round for the Masters tournament, when IM Enrique
Scarella (5 out 6) - he has "rest day" yesterday- will play the white side
against Shredder 8 (6 out 7) - the program won by default against FM Eduardo
Recoulat-. "Quique" Scarella is going to put his best efforts in order to
score his first point against one of Chessbase´s leading programs!
