In this position black has an active king. I.e. It is inside the square of any white passed pawn, none. And it is close to all white unsafe pawns at c4, f3, h2. It is in fact much closer to all those weaknesses than white is to the closest black ones at a7, h7. So black has three weaknesses and that is at least one more than needed. Implementing a function that returns an exact metric might be hard but a reasonable one and search will probably be accurate enough. That and pawn race resolution should be enough to evaluate most pawn endgames. MvH Dan Andersson
