When investing funds in a venture, one likes to research that venture first to see if it is any "good". Giving to a charity (or any other non-profit organization) works the same way. It was suggested here by an official of the ICGA that people should sign up (give) and thus lend a voice for positive change. If one is going to consider taking that advice, one likes to know a little more. In my line of work, defenestration is an essential function of any endeavor, if that endeavor is meant to survive. :)
