What exactly are you doing?

The xboard 4.2.7 source compiles without problem on OSX:

unpack the tar file onto the Desktop using Stuffit by double-clicking on it

launch Terminal

cd Desktop/xboard-4.2.7
./configure
make

or just use pre-compiled version with fink (4.2.6)
