It is irrelevant that "they gave it away". The cost has nothing to do with it or, because otherwise it would be impossible to protect the copyrights of freeware (which we all know IS protected by law). So, once again, and not being a legal expert in any way but having been involved in the release of LOTS of software, I feel that there is no problem with using the CMX000 engine within CM9000 as long as you legally obtained both engines and both programs were legally installed on the same computer. >John Merlino can explain why this wouldn't have happen on his watch. The problem is that it uses the same formula as the CM9000 engine. I made sure that the formula from CM8000 was changed for CM9000 to prevent this from happening. >Some may actually take the engine and give Johan 20 bucks! That would be good >for Johan...and suck for Ubi-Soft:) Which would be illegal for BOTH parties. Johan (IIRC) is not allowed to make any money from The King apart from Chessmaster sales. And users are not allowed to have copies of the engine that were obtained outside Ubi Soft's distribution channels. jm
