i configure it, not as easily as you say, but by adding
--x-includes=/usr/X11R6/include --x-libraries=/usr/X11R6/lib, and it works fine,
then when i tell it to make, it says "error: parse error before boolean" and
then error: parse error before "next item" all the way down the list.  any
ideas?
