A chess engine is the part of a program that actually either analyzes a position
for you or plays against you. Most engines will do both. You have to decide what
you need or want a program for depending on your rating. If you don't have a
rating you then should use a chess program to play against for. Below is a list
of free chess programs. If you can't figure out how to run Crafty get Rebel
Decade or one of the other engines. Go to the GambitSoft site for a Gold Medal
list of all the programs including commercial ones.
