It is _always_ on. The trojan code is only turned on when needed. IE when the
root position contains a "trojan signature".
I have no idea what is going on in this game, but normal crafty will _not_ play
the move at move 8 for black. Something is simply broken in whatever it is you
are running there. Your pgn claims that Crafty did a 11 ply search. Here is
the output for searching for black at move 8 through 13 plies. No hxg to be
found anywhere, as expected. You might notice the "trojan check enabled"
message as well showing that the trojan horse code was being used in that
particular position:
