I agree that this sounds very confusing for non-programmers. It used to be easier when Eugene Nalimov did the "official" Crafty compiles, and so the casual user would just use whatever binary he found on Bob's website. But you shouldn't forget that this matters much less than you would think following the discussions. It is just about disabling or enabling some features, choosing some compiler, and then optimizing for speed - the net result is usually about 10-15% of speed difference the most, which would result in about 7 ELO points difference ;) . Personally I just use the latest Crafty versions Mike Byrne provides, as they tend to be fastest for me, and I don't worry too much about the discussions to avoid developping a headache :).
