I'm not quite sure what you mean, but if you mean that the program presents several suggested continuations, (what KK kalls K-var <grin>) HIARCS does that. For example, if the position is: rq2r1k1/5pp1/p7/4bNP1/1p2P2P/5Q2/PP4K1/5R1R w - - and HIARCS is set to "monitor mode", "variations = 3", then the analysis is shown for three lines: 6»23 9 f5xg7 e8-f8 g7-f5 e5xb2 f5-h6+ g8-h8 h6xf7+ h8-g7 = 390 6»23 10 f5-e3 b8-b7 e3-c4 a8-d8 f3-f5 e5-d4 = 92 6»23 11 b2-b3 b8-c7 h4-h5 c7-d8 f3-e3 a8-c8 = 45 Note that the three lines shown aren't necessarily the same lines one would see if one searched to the same depth as above, but used the "next best" option repeatedly to find the best, second-best, third-best move. In this example, the latter yields: 07 1.Nxg7 Rf8 Nf5 Bxb2 Nh6+ Kh8 Nxf7+ Kg7 = 390 07 1.h5 Qd8 g6 Qd2+ Rf2 Qg5+ Ng3 f6 Qb3+ Kh8 = 104 07 1.Ne3 Qb7 = 71 So, some doubt has been cast on the utility of this function. There was a lot of discussion of this on r.g.c.c. a few years ago, but I can't seem to get dejanews to search any earlier than about Jan 1, 1996. Any suggestions? Richard A.
