I have no idea if that is a vaild assumption or not. A few months ago. the Chessbase website was offering a signed Fritz 8 as one of their prizes - I am not sure if this one of them or not. http://www.chessbase.com/puzzle/christmas2003/chr03-9e.htm The autographs pictured on the chessbase site look very similiar if not identical to the one in the eBay auction. He would have better off by just starting it at $1.
