I don't think 1. ... d5 is "ugly".  It's in all my opening theory books.  :)
But as to why Crafty plays it, I don't know unless you somehow have a bookc.bin
that I did specifically for someone that wanted to play that opening as black.

I'll check the file on the ftp server to be sure it is right...  Just checked,
Crafty will play the center counter about one of every ten times it sees white
play 1. e4...

Yes it learns.  and it defaults to on so long as you don't have a learn=0 in
your crafty.rc file...
