Some of them were not avilable for free at the time, for the others the
advantage is that via winboard adapter they had the cache cleared each move,
besides the installation was "cumbersome".
So a native engine would push the most out of the einge and for some people it
was nice to have a copy of the eingine you could install by just dropping a file
in the appropriate directoty.
Installation is a huge matter: look at windows vs linux. Many poeple prefer
windows for the larger amount of apps, many other don't need more than what
linux could offer, but can't cope with the installation process.
