I have recently added a new opening book and opening book format to Rival. It now makes an opening book from a PGN file and can be requested to create a new book from within the GUI. It stores the positions in a plain text file as FENs along with the number of white wins, black wins and draws and can be asked to restrict the book based on the percentage of wins for the side who would make the move that leads to each position and the number of plys examined in each game. The idea was mainly fueled after reading how Crafty creates its book.bin file. Is this relatively in keeping with how others implement opening books or am I, as is often the case, way of the mark?
