fyi status of the GUI is 1.0 ( however we know lot of things we have to improve) and of the engine 0.33 ( due to my recent move from sunny CA to austria i had to reduce my effort). at the moment pirat is first of all a GUI with a lot of functionality not seen in other GUI's , at least in our opinion. as my brother and me are Correspondence-chess players our first focus was to implement an environment which allows analysis of position under guidance of a human user. later on we extended pirat by adding evaluation-tools so we can easily find out where our engine was lacking. if in one game my engine achieved an evaluation of plus 5 pawns but looses the game there is probably an area of improvement. we usually run 200 games against 5-7 engine each before we evaluate the games and calculate the new ELO of the engine. The exact condition are 40 moves in 20 minutes, than 20 moves in 10 Minuten , than 5 Minuten for the rest of the game . the opening is defined by a downloadable file turnier.pgn. you may find out the those position are either from NUNN1-2 or these position are judged as equal by the theory. openings are distributed over the completed ECO-range. every engine has to play white and black . pondering is disabled ( we found one weaker engine where pondering could not been disabled and eliminated that engine from our tournament). Usage of endgame -database is enabled where ever the engine supports this (3,4 and 5-stones). We found out that tournament result based on 5-20 are absolutely worthless. even after 100 games a deviation of plus/minus 5 percent is possible. in the currently release we found that pirat benefits from faster platform much more than other engines. we assume due to larger cache the non-optimized engine profits more. so we will over the time eliminate those slower PC's (500, 900Mhz) from our test. the progress of the engine is slow buts but things are getting better. still weak and a lot of things to do. i think thats applies to most of engine-developers anyway. still had no time to implement some ideas of my diploma thesis. under http://www.go-pirat.de/uci_turniere.htm you find the condition and elo-number of amateur-engines we played under our GUI. those number matches very well other statistics. its possible to run WB or UCI-engine under pirat-GUI. In our opinion absolutely stable. We are eager to get bug-reports. the pirat-engine is not a clone of another engine and has been written in delphi 2.0. few assembler routines. the webpage is unfortunately written in german , so in case you need translation help or have any other question please feel free to contact me (jpirat@aol.com).
