Hi >>1. This is one GUI (how many real ones are there - 4 - 5) >>2. There is absolutly NO need to know all this to run the GUI, but you have to >>know the commands for this WB-engine, and for this engine, and for this engine >>and for this engine, and ... so on! >What's the difference? How many "real" WinBoard engines are there? 4-5 ? With >"real" I mean those you would prefer to play against yourself or to use as your >analysis tools ( the same would apply to ChessBase engines of course). Ok, got me! There is exactly WB-protokoll only engine that could caused enough attraction: Crafty! > >The average number of installed WinBoard engines on my computers is 1.5, and >this number looks even less impressive if you know that all of them have Yace Yace + Crafty you should write 2.5 and YACE can be used as a UCI engine, give it a try :-) >>The problem is not CRAFTY as an entity for itself (4 day, now I think I now the >>most important things - overall acceptable), the problem is the diversity of >>wb-engines. > >In 4 days you will be able to check some options even Bob might have forgotten >about ;). Anyway, I don't see the major difference to UCI- or ChessBase-engines >except "ease of initial installation" "ease of initial installation" Is'nt that what we are talking about? >Judging from discussions here you'll still >have to decide if you use the Runge, the Wizard or even the Deep Fritz book - >and what to choose as hashtable size ? How about that mysterious 1MB bug? >learn files or not ? Or use Nunn positions ? And how? And is your computer fast >enough to show the true strength of engine XXX :) ? That are decisions I have to do allways despite the engines or protokolls I use , except 1 MB bug, but that is not really a question for me ;-). If I use aditionaly wb-engines then I have to start all that "how to" again. You just have to look at the Fora how many questions are something like: Engine XYZ is not doing this or that what am I doing wrong (or close-to-that-questions). If they are done with all that it is starting again with "How to configure WB2UCI. Or have a look at all the websites that try to explain the installation of engine x,y and z; that offers ini and rc files for the engines and ready made wb2UCI.eng files ... Please compare that to questions regarding "real"-UCI-engine installations. Ever thought why this is like it is for the WB-engines and not for UCI engines (Ok, lets assume there are 10% real UCI questions!) Bye Ingo
