I've found >equal value within a normal G5 and Opteron... the opterons are definitely faster (for integer apps like chess), but unfortunately also more expensive -- whenever I go to Alienware or Boxx to price a dual opteron, I come away shuddering ;-) fyi, Sun has announced their initial single-, dual-, and quad-opteron offerings, with OS choices of Solaris 9, Linux, or Windows I think the decision comes down to issues like "which apps you plan to run?" "what software you already own vs will have to buy?" and "which OS you want to work in?" Frank P.S. if you find a cheap dual-opteron, let us know where you got it :-)
