That might be your opinion. IMHO it is pointless to use anything else when
communicating between two software. Coordinate notation has the advantage that
it is not ambiguous, unlike SAN. In any case, for the purposes of a protocol, it
is quite sufficient, and that is what is required. Nothing less, nothing more.

But I'm not sure what is needed in

This is the batch file I use to play Nawtarlal on FICS, hope it helps:

C:
cd "\Program Files\WinBoard\"
WinBoard -zp -zadj -zab -ics -icshost freechess.org -fd "C:\Program
Files\WinBoard\Natwarlal" -fcp natwarlal -icshelper timeseal
-zippyGameEnd="\nseek 5 0\nseek 2 12\nseek 5 6\n" -zippyGameStart="say This is
an automated computer.\n" -zippyMaxGames 3 -sgf icsgames.pgn -autoflag

with this command line, xboard will play automated on FICS, autoseeking,
autoaccepting and autoplaying games, with the time controls 5 0, 2 12, and 5 6
It will also autoflag the opponent if he runs out of time, and all the games are
saved in the file icsgames.pgn
