If u sign up for the free week that ICC gives anyone for trying out their
service (first rate, by the way), U can play SloFlo, the regular bot that is
normally around 1200 ELO. Is very good for beginners. Once in a while you will
also see a bot called Polemeo on, that is a crippled version of "Crafty" that
loves to give up pieces. As far as WBEC( http://wbec-ridderkerk.nl/ ), when the
page comes up, near the top part is "ratings", if u right click on that and tell
it to open in a new window, then scroll down to the bottom of the list for many
of the weaker engines. Using 2 windows will allow u to look on 1 page and decide
with the other more easily. Winboard is the first of the interfaces for playing
against a computer engine, but not the most beginner friendly, especially
setting up more/different engines, but there is a good FAQ/Help page to be found
at Aaron's Guide ( http://www.aarontay.per.sg/Winboard/index.html ) It is quite
extensive in the how-to department, and even now has a guide with plenty of
screenshots to help walk U thru. If U would like a nicer interface that is a
little easier to use and is full of many features, and can be used as interface
on many of the free chess servers, I highly recommend "ARENA" (
http://www.playwitharena.com/ )
much more user friendly, and very well supported with bunches of extras that as
u become more advanced in your chess playing abilities, will offer you plenty
more oppurtunities to get better engines to play against and also excellent
abilities to have the engines analyze and annotate your games for you. This is
one of the most essential things for chess improvment, reviewing your games to
see what you did wrong, and where you may improve from/to. There is also a page
on Aarons FAQ about Arena and how to there also. The interface of Arena is much
easier to load "engines" as we call them(bots as u refered to them) and to refer
back to Aarons pages for more help on general ideas of how to set up most of
them. Good luck and enjoy
