1) 500$ was only required for pros. Amateurs got sponsored if they participated.

2) What would the use of the qualitfying even be?

Note that the proposal *was* to have a championship format consisting
of 2 parts (swiss qualif for knockout + knockout for title). It was
changed on request of the players!
