They actually *did* run optimized for P4 3.6Ghz Xeon 1MB L2 cache. Note that the RAM and the videocard (for putchar) was a lot faster on the P4 and i would not be surprised if also a SCSI diskpack was used at the p4 dual xeon versus an old IDE at the A64. It was a very deliberate attempt because the homepage from the primegen author he already mentions that the generating of the primes itself takes 8 seconds versus outputting it takes 25 seconds.
