Apart from reading online tutorials I also suggest reading some papers about
game programming, for example Aske Plaat's work "Research Re: search &
Re-search" (http://www.xs4all.nl/~aske/pubs.html). They will give you some
theoretical background, and allow to understand how chess search algorithms work
much better than the tutorials. It is not necessary at the beginning to
understand everything that's in them, but it will allow you to create your first
program on a more solid basis.
