Subject: what is the correct format for PGN variations?

aloha!

i was just asked what the correct format for PDN variations should be
(checkers), and thought i would look up what PGN does, but...:

chessbase:
1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 (2. Bc4) (2. Nc3) 2... Nc6 (2... Nf6) (2... d6)

SCID:
1.b3 g5 2.d4 ( 2.e4 ( 2.f3 ) )

1.b3 g5 2.d4 ( 2.e4 ( 2.f3 ) )
2...f6 ( 2...e6 ( 2...h6 ) )

so when 2 variations are given to one move, chessbase does (var 1)(var 2), while
SCID does (move_1_of_var_1 (var 2) rest_of_var_1).

what is correct?

cheers
  martin
