For some reason, my new chess engine seems to be such an application. The
speed on a PIV 2.4 GHz is comparable to the speed on an Athlon XP 2400.
Gothmog, my old engine, behaves very differently. It's about 40% faster
on the Athlon.

I don't know enough about the two processors to be able to guess the reason.
Perhaps it is related to the fact that Gothmog is rather big (~200 KB),
while the new engine is tiny (~50 KB).
