I think that a second possibility is that the hash that is used is too big.

I rememebr that Igor from the infinite loop with 256 mbytes hash does not give
engines 64 mbytes but less than it because he found that even 1/4 of the ram for
every engine is too much hash if he wants to prevent similiar problems.
