Subject: Strange Pronunciations In Chess Nomenclature (Giuoco Piano, Max Euwe)

Author: Ed Trice

Date: 06:50:20 08/17/04

I saw down below that someone, even at age 50, was not sure how to pronounce
"Giuoco Piano".I have often encountered things in print in the chess literature
that have left me scrunching my eyebrows in wonder.

Over the years, here is what I have heard that has surprised me. If anyone of
these phonetical pronunciations are wrong, feel free to jump in and correct.

=====
Giuoco Piano...
is like "JUCK-o" and the piano part is the same.

Lucena Position...
is like "Lou-CHEN-a".

Max Euwe's last name...
is actually like UR-ver and not "YOU-ee".

Alekhine...
does not rhyme with wine, it is like a-LEK-inn with a short "i" (and emphasis on
the second syllable).

This is all I can think of off of the top of my head. If anyone wants to add to
this list, feel free.
