Subject: Announcing the first public release of C.A.P. data!

Author: Dann Corbit

It is our pleasure to announce the first public release of data from the Chess
Analysis Project. There are two EPD files in my public directory, which contain
an analysis of all 500 standard ECO openings. The data is constantly
re-refined, and in the future will be much improved. The actual EPD files are
as follows:

ftp://38.168.214.175/pub/eco_pri.epd
ftp://38.168.214.175/pub/eco_sec.epd

Eco_pri.epd contains the information from the primary analysis table. Some of
the interesting positions [about 150] have been analyzed at 8 hours
("interesting" is defined in this case, as having a large CE after 12 minutes of
analysis.) It is assumed to be of better quality than the data from the
secondary table (but there is no guarantee of this). Eco_sec.epd contains the
information from the secondary analysis table (alternate opinions). It is
assumed to be of lesser quality than the data from the secondary table. There
are a large number of tactical blunders in standard opening positions. Quite
likely, they have already been discussed in the current chess literature, but
perhaps not. At any rate, it is certainly worth a look-see. There are clearly
cases where the chosen move in a standard opening is not as good as the move
suggested by analysis. By no means is this data suggested as any sort of
alternative to the actual ECO encyclopedia books, but rather as a supplement.

It has been three months since the completion of the first Chess Analysis
Project phase -- the analysis of all 500 standard ECO openings. The C.A.P.
project consists of many phases. Currently, we are analyzing about 130,000
distinct positions from 1. b4 games (Project OrAnG UtAn -- which is
approximately 32 times larger than the first phase of the project) and will
complete that project in an estimated one or two weeks. Public release will
follow completion by three months. Our next project will be project Heartwood,
which will commence at the completion of Project OrAnG UtAn. To find out more
about the Chess Analysis Project, examine the C.A.P. FAQ at:
ftp://38.168.214.175/pub/Chess%20Analysis%20Project%20FAQ.htm

Since the data presented currently is in EPD format, you might like to get one
of the excellent EPD viewers available from the Rebel home page listings for
Manfred Rosenboom's excellent free EPD tools epd2diag and jsEpd2diag:
http://www.rebel.nl/epd2diag.htm

Eventually, a SQL release of all data will be made public, including the schema
of the SQL database itself.
