I usually suggest to create a book based on your own otb reportuare to put up on top of the engines book. Eg. in Shredder Classic as a gui book with enabling both the gui and engine book. This way the games get more interesting to watch and maybe you learn something too. In addition, I have made a bookdelay parametre in my own engine so you get time to follow the opening moves too. For testing the adapter this is more challanged, but would maybe not give a correct result if your goal is to test the engine. Anyhow, in a perfect world, the engine should manage to play from all sorts of openings. Odd Gunnar (I see you play guitar, I droped the BoureƩ and Cavatina when I started with chess 15 years ago)
